Now we’ve already discussed some nice and easy ways to tell if a diamond is real or a fake (well, not necessary a fake, but most probably an unmarked moissanite or cubic zirconia), here are some more that are guaranteed to make you feel like a diamond expert!
I guess this doesn’t need mentioning anymore, but loosediamonds are REALLY EXPENSIVE. Naturally you’ll want it mounted only on metal fitting of its value and beauty. A diamond will almost never be set on silver, only on high quality gold, white gold or platinum. Look for markers such as 10K, 14K, 18K, these are stamps usually found on the inside of gold bands. The numbers 585, 750, 900, 950, PT and Plat are used to designate the purity of platinum and can be found on the inside of platinum bands. Anything that says CZ means you don’t have a genuine diamond mounted on your ring but a cubic zirconia.
This is a simple household test similar to the “newsprint test” and especially effective when dealing with diamonds which are already mounted. You can place diamondengagementrings or any mounted jewelry underwater. Fake diamonds will appear clear but real diamonds will still be very visible, thanks to their unique optical properties.
Another good way to check if your diamond is fake is to use UV or black light on it. A real diamond should have a bluish glow which can go from faint to strong. A cubic zirconia, on the other hand, will have a yellow glow.
